Hiiumaa

The Island

Hiiumaa invites stillness. Encircled by the Baltic Sea, shaped by ancient winds, this remote Estonian island offers rare quiet and clarity. Recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, its untamed nature and slow rhythm create space to reconnect with something elemental. Here, between forest and sea, Eha finds its grounding. Seasons shape every experience. Silence is not empty, it’s full of presence.

Island Geography & Estonia

Hiiumaa is Estonia’s second-largest island, part of the West Estonian Archipelago. With just nine people per square kilometre, its quiet presence contrasts the noise of modern life. Its isolation has preserved a sense of timelessness, and a way of being attuned to natural rhythms.

History & Traditions

A place of quiet resilience, Hiiumaa carries centuries of maritime history and pre-Christian beliefs like maausk (faith in the land). Its traditions are deeply local, passed down through stories, rituals and everyday gestures. Here, heritage isn't a performance, it’s a lived and evolving presence.

Nature

Two-thirds of Hiiumaa is covered in forest. Its wild beaches, bird sanctuaries and ancient woodlands offer a rare ecological richness. Minimal light pollution reveals skies alive with stars. Here, nature doesn’t entertain, it offers restoration, perspective and a quiet wonder.

Climate

Hiiumaa enjoys a distinct micro climate, milder than mainland Estonia, with fresh sea air thatsharpens the senses. Winters are still. Summers stretch into long light. And between them, the fifth season, Springrise, marks a fleeting awakening. What unfolds here begins with the seasons; subtle, steady, essential.

Seasons

Where light, stillness and change lead the way

Summers are long and light-filled, winters bring peaceful stillness, and Estonia’s rare fifth season, Springrise, marks the island’s quiet awakening between ice and bloom.
